How to Apply for NIRF Ranking?

Now that we’ve understood the parameters and scoring methodology of NIRF, this article walks through the process of applying for NIRF Rankings.

Eligibility

Before applying, institutions must ensure they meet the basic eligibility criteria:

  • Must have been operational for at least three academic years
  • Must have graduated at least three batches of students in full-time UG or PG programmes (minimum duration: 3 years for UG, 2 years for PG)
  • Must be recognised by the relevant statutory body — UGC, AICTE, MCI, or equivalent
  • Polytechnic and teacher education institutions are generally not eligible

To apply for NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework), Higher Education Institutions in India typically need to follow these steps:

Register on the NIRF Portal

  • Visit the official NIRF Website (https://www.nirfindia.org/).
  • Look for the registration link or portal for institutions interested in participating in the ranking process.
  • Create an account or log in if you already have one.

Provide Institutional Information

  • Fill out the necessary details about your institution, including its name, location, type (university, college, etc.), affiliation, and contact information.
  • Verify and update any existing institutional data to ensure accuracy.

Submit Data and Documents

  • NIRF requires institutions to submit comprehensive data related to various parameters, such as teaching, research, outreach, and perception. This data may include faculty qualifications, student-to-teacher ratios, research publications, student placement records, and more.
  • Institutions are often asked to provide supporting documents and evidence to substantiate the data they submit. Ensure that all documents are accurate and up-to-date.
  • From NIRF 2025, all submitted data must be hosted on the institution’s website for three years for public scrutiny

Review and Verification

  • NIRF authorities may review the data submitted by institutions for accuracy and authenticity.
  • Institutions may be asked to provide additional information or clarifications during this process.

Ranking Publication

  • Once the evaluation and verification process is complete, NIRF publishes the rankings on its official website.

The NIRF ranking process runs on an annual cycle, with specific timelines and deadlines for each edition. Institutions keen on participating should regularly monitor the NIRF website for updated guidelines and registration windows.

It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to submit precise and comprehensive data. Accurate submissions ensure a fair evaluation — and ultimately reflect the institution’s rightful place in the rankings.
